Our trip to Venice in the Spring of 2025 coincided with Carnival, a truly astonishing visual phenomenon. There were balls and festivals - one which commandeered the ground floor of our hotel. Very pricy admission fees which we passed on. However, walking the streets were a free festival all their own.
As a teacher I spent my life as an agent of change. Moving students from lethargy to curiosity, leading to a life of positive action. I was a motivational speaker for an active mind and living an active life. It was, in a word, exhausting. I do not believe that those frenetic years led to my multiple myeloma, but I have decided that it is time to pass my "agent of change cape" to a younger generation, and put on the more relaxing garb of an “agent of calm.” This blog explores that new role.

The Four Horsemen of Carnival
Here are a few examples:
So while seeking some new inspiration for a drawing I continued to browse through my photos from that trip and came across these guys:
They were fascinating for their complete black garb in an explosion of color. So I decided to "re-costume" them. The first step was to remove the black and reduce them to this line drawing:
Next I designed their various costumes as additional line drawings:
And then created their final version by painting in the details. And so: The Four Horsemen of Carnival.
